IBM Punch Cards were one technique used to create EDL's.

This particular card was used in an episode of the very popular "Barney Miller Show."

This show was edited on 1" tape. Time code was burned into the tapes, and when the final cut was done, these times would be read from the tape, and a punch card would be made for each cut.

A computer program then read the punched cards, and created a standard EDL on paper tape. This paper tape would be used to control the auto-assembly process.

One of the major advantages of using punched cards, was the ease with which corrections and changes could be made.

Each column of the card holds one ASCII character. The design of the program that converted the cards to an EDL minimized the amount of information that needed to be punched.

As an aid, the top line of the punch card has a printed copy of the data on the card.
