The TRT-1B was RCA's first production quad video tape recorder. The TRT-1B
recordings were compatible with those made on an Ampex VR-1000.
Prior to the TRT-1B, RCA produced the TRT-1. These machines were used by
the NBC network owned and operated stations for production, and time zone
delay. The recordings were not compatible with the Ampex.

In addition to the control panel pictured at the right, there was a
foot peddle for releasing the brakes (just visible in the above photo), and
adjustments on many of the chassis.
Not shown in the above photograph, but provided on later machines, was a
transistorized video processing package. It was located near the waveform
monitor.

With the color option, a TRT-1B required six racks of electronic equipment.

The TRT-1B was my introduction to video recording.
I first used them as an operator, and later, became involved in their
maintenance.
Some of my fondest memories... Forgetting to drain the condensed water
from the head wheel compressor, and halfway through a playback, having
water begin spitting out of the head... full color playbacks, with skew
and scallop (heterodyne color processing)... putting a new head on a
machine, recording a 90-minute show, and finding the head completely worn
out (due to a piece of "green" tape)... fixing the many, many, relays, by
soldering a piece of copper braid across a broken hinge.
